Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Beyond Van Gogh immersive exhibit at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool and what a beautiful experience it was. Unlike any traditional museum exhibition I’ve attended before, this one reimagines the way we engage with art, making it more accessible, emotional, and most of all alive.
From the moment you step into the space, you’re surrounded by Van Gogh’s iconic works in a completely new format. The first section is a display of art work being used as a back drop for story telling. You follow the frames and read about Van Gogh’s turbulent life and his love affair with art. It was fascinating and although I already knew the highlights from school there was so much new (to me) information.

From here you enter a second room, a much larger space where you are literally surrounded with Van Gogh’s work. The paintings aren’t just displayed on the walls though, they move, morph, and emerge before your eyes, accompanied by a carefully curated soundtrack that creates a fabulous atmosphere.
How you experience it is up to you. You can wonder round the room taking it all in, sit on one of the many soft benches in the middle of the room or even find a spot on the floor and relax as the paintings wash over you, or a mixture of all three as once in here you are free to move around as you please.

Watching the artwork slowly take shape, fill with colour, and then spill across the walls is nothing short of magical. It’s not something that can truly be captured in photos or event videos, although I did try with an instagram reel, you simply have to be there to feel it.
Once you are finished in the main room you can enter the final room which is a cute walk way inspired by the famous sunflower painting where you will find yourself surrounding by life size sunflowers, before finishing up in the gift shop.

Overall thoughts
Overall I really enjoyed this experience and what stood out the most was how inviting and engaging the exhibit was, especially for children. During my trip there were at least 4 schools there and it made me realise what a brilliant way this type of exhibit is to spark their interest in art and creativity without the usual “don’t touch” museum experience. Instead, they’re free to look, feel, and be immersed. Whether you like rt or not I would recommend giving this a visit and checking it out for yourself.
