Going for an afternoon tea is one of my favourite things to do. It is perfect for any special occasion and it’s something the whole family can enjoy together. Over the years I have tried a few afternoon teas from bottomless prosecco’s to Italian inspired ones and everything in between. I have tried some amazing ones and some rather disappointing ones, so to help you avoid wasting your money on some soggy sandwiches and cold tea I have put together a list of my favourite places to go for afternoon tea in Chester where you will be sure to get your moneys worth and have a wonderful time.
Afternoon tea in Chester
The historic city of Chester is the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon enjoying a sumptuous afternoon tea and a glass of champagne teamed with a walk down the river dee, a saunter round he shops or even a spa day.
Veeno
In the very heart of the city centre just opposite the cathedral is a small restaurant called Veeno. It is situated on the corner and looks more like a deli than a restaurant, however, looks can be deceiving as they do have additional seating upstairs and outside so don’t be put off by the size. Veeno is an Italian restaurant which means this is an afternoon tea with a difference. You won’t find any cucumber sandwiches or homemade scones here, instead you will get lots of parma ham and mozzarella cheese. The sandwiches are served on Foccia and are incredible and huge!
Everything we tried was delicious and my top tip is go hungry and the portions are very generous and it’s so delicious you will not wan to leave any.
You can book direct or grab a gift voucher from groupon for a great deal. Veeno also offer a few different types of afternoon teas with and without alcohol as well as some brilliant pizza and prosecco deals too which would be the perfect gift for the person that already as everything.
The Town House Chester
If you are looking for a more traditional afternoon tea in Chester then my recommendation has got to be for The Town House Chester, a hotel on Lower Bridge Street which is only a two minute walk from the River Dee. When we visited we opted for the bottomless prosecco afternoon tea which we bought via a Buyagift voucher for £50.90 for the two of us. The food was lovely and traditional with a selection of finger sandwiches, mini cakes and the all important scones, cream and jam and of course lots and lots of prosecco. This was by far the best value for money as not only was there plenty of the food but the prosecco was flowing freely and it is only because we decided to stop that our glasses became empty as the staff were happy to keep pouring. The Town House Chester is the perfect venue for a true celebratory afternoon tea in Chester and in my opinion is the best afternoon tea I’ve ever had.
Patisseri Valeri
Patisseri Valeri s a delicatessens that also offers meals, including afternoon teas. They are part of a chain and although I, myself, have not eaten at the one in Chester I have enjoyed their afternoon tea at the Cheshire Oaks branch which is about a 15 minute drive away but I am told that the menu and quality of food is the same at all restaurants. They offer a traditional afternoon tea menu with a delightful selection of sandwiches, however I would say the emphasis here is on the cakes, which isn’t surprising considering that is their speciality. When we visited we bought a voucher from Groupon which made it incredibly good value for money, so I highly recommend you see if there are any offers on there first. They don’t offer alcohol with their afternoon teas but the hot drinks are bottomless!
Chester Cathedral
If you are looking for an afternoon tea in the heart of Chester City centre then why not book a trip to Café 1092, which is set in the thirteenth century monks’ dining hall within Chester Cathedral. You will be surrounded by beauty with a seventeenth-century tapestry on the west wall, paintings representing the Earls of Chester and the beautiful Creation Window depicting the six days of creation, the perfect backdrop for a delightful experience. They offer the classic afternoon tea served on a three-tiered stand filled with finger sandwiches, plain scones, strawberry jam and a selection of cakes. They also offer a children’s afternoon tea too.
Grosvenor Pulford
Although classed as being in Chester, the Grosvenor Pulford Hotel is not in the city centre so you will need to be able to drive or get a taxi there if staying in the city. It is a beautiful location for an afternoon tea, served in the Palm Court garden room restaurant. The afternoon tea includes a freshly-prepared selection of finely-cut sandwiches and homemade scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, followed by a delectable and delicate array of hand-prepared pastries and sweet treats and is served with an extensive selection of loose-leaf teas or freshly-brewed coffee or you can upgrade and add on a glass of fizz, wine or even a cocktail . Advance booking is essential and given notice they are happy yo cater for your dietary requirements too.
Afternoon Tea near Chester
Inglewood Manor
Just outside of Chester, about 15 – 20 minutes in the car is a beautiful country hotel called Inglewood Manor. About two years ago I was invited for a festive afternoon tea and it was wonderful. The whole hotel was decorated for Christmas, complete with a roaring fire and the atmosphere was cosy and magical. Never before had I thought about going to a hotel simply for a meal or afternoon tea, I always associated them with having to stay the night but Inglewood manor welcome non accommodation guests too, so if you can travel and are looking for something a little festive then I would highly recommend the afternoon tea at Inglewood manor which is surprisingly affordable at £19.99 each and you can add on a glass of prosecco if you wish.
Afternoon tea at home
If you fancy an afternoon tea but for whatever reason find you are unable, or unwilling, to leave the house then let me also recommend the Piglets Pantry afternoon tea. Piglets Pantry offer a home delivery service for their afternoon teas and you can order them for 2 or four people. Their afternoon teas contain a mix of savoury treats, including scotch eggs and sausage rolls, as well as some sweet delights in the form of delicious cakes. Plus, as you are at home you can easily add a bottle of prosecco, or your drink of choice and not have to worry about driving! You can order the Piglets Pantry direct from their website or buy a voucher from BuyaGift. Piglets Pantry deliver nation wide so this isn’t just an afternoon tea in Chester but an afternoon tea in the UK.
Wherever you decide to book I do hope you find the perfect afternoon tea in Chester for you, just make sure you check out the deals and vouchers before you book as there are always some cracking deals on for afternoon teas and whilst in the city make sure you check out some of the best places to go in Chester too and really make a day of it.
