Today’s beauty trends are some of the most exciting we’ve seen for generations. Why? Because a lot of the hottest trends all revolve around the idea of personal expression. It’s a shift from years gone by, when the focus was on trying to replicate what celebrities or influencers were doing. Now, it’s all about going out there and styling yourself however you want.
As a consequence, we’re seeing an increase in certain trends and ideas throughout the beauty/fashion world – and here are some of the most exciting:
Bright Hair Colors
It’s quite sad how people with brightly colored hair were almost shoehorned into a box for decades. If you had anything other than brown, black, or blond hair, you were perceived as “different” or “trying too hard”. Recent beauty trends are changing this – we saw the rise of red hair in the last few years, along with even bolder colors like blue, green, and pink.
It’s refreshing to see so many different hair colors in public nowadays, and it’s all down to people wanting to express themselves. Your hair says a lot about you – it’s what people notice the most when they see you – so it’s a fantastic way of freeing yourself from society’s shackles and just being you.
More Unique Hair Styles
Speaking of which, hair styling has also seen huge shifts as of late. The best way to see examples of this is by looking at schools. Little girls used to all have the same long hair – sometimes you’d get a girl or two with a bob – now, you see girls with shaved sides, expressive fringes, and so many more cool styles.
This is a trickle-down effect from the adult world, which has seen an explosion of women adopting more unique and expressive hairstyles. Loads of people now want short hair wedding styles instead of the classic long look, fades are very popular, textured short hair is in – there are so many cool examples out there.
Where has this trend come from? To be honest, I think women’s sports play a big role. Girls are growing up with more female role models in the sporting world, and a lot of these women need to cut their hair to make it more comfortable. You see a higher diversity of hairstyle expressions, and people copy them.
Expressive Facial Piercings
Gone are the days when an ear piercing was seen as bold. It’s incredibly “normal” to have your ears pierced, and people have now moved on to more extravagant ideas. You’ve got the bold snake bite piercing, nose rings, eyebrow piercing, and much more. These facial piercings are all quite expressive because there’s no hiding from them. You can cover your ears with hair or a hat – but nothing can cover up a piercing on your face.
And that’s what makes them popular! Women and girls are sick of being told what’s “proper”. You’re not meant to have facial piercings because…why exactly? Everyone struggles to conjure up an answer without saying: “It’s not ladylike.” That’s what they’re all thinking, and we’re sick of the sexist stereotypes and unconscious biases like that.
Facial piercings have grown as a statement more than anything else, as a direct response to nonsense like that. When you see someone with a lip, eyebrow, or nose piercing, you know they don’t care what other people think and have done it because it’s how they want to express themselves!
Bold & Creative Makeup
Go back a decade or more, and everyone wore the same makeup. Remember when nightclubs did that thing where they had a photographer take pictures and then uploaded them to Facebook? Maybe they still do, and I’m out of the loop, but you could scroll through a whole album, and everyone would have the same makeup style.
Things are no longer like that. People have realized that wearing the same makeup gets boring. It also doesn’t feel very “you” – especially when you want to be bold and creative. You don’t want to go outside and have a bog-standard foundation with maybe a bit of mascara on. You want to celebrate life and show your personality with bright colors, amazingly creative eye makeup, bright lipstick, and so much more.
Freedom of expression is a beautiful thing, and this makeup trend is definitely leading the way. The more people do it, the more it inspires the younger generation to do things that help them express who they truly are.
Artistic Nails
What about people who don’t wear makeup or feel like they’re not good at doing it on themselves? Well, they’re finding another way to express their creativity through artistic nails. Anybody can hop on Amazon and buy a nail kit these days. You get a UV lamp, different colors, and the freedom to do whatever you want.
Bright and colorful nails have always been quite trendy – this trend incorporates all kinds of fun nail art designs. You could put stars on your nails, draw tiny pictures, make them all rainbow-themed, and so on. People love this because it’s like you’re creating art on yourself, and this makes you feel good inside. You can also use your artistic nails to make a statement or express yourself in a very unique way.

Clashing With a Purpose
A favorite trend for those who are truly sick of being told what to wear. Oh, you must wear this type of top with these trousers – and you absolutely cannot wear these two colors together! The days of following strict fashion trends and style patterns are over; it’s all about clashing with a purpose.
People are making statements by purposely clashing their clothes. It’s the simplest and most meaningful way of saying to the world: look, I’m me, and you’re just going to have to deal with it.
There is a tiny bit of irony in listing loads of beauty trends and then saying they’re all about personal expression. Don’t feel as though you need to go out and copy everything above – that’s the complete opposite of the point! It’s simply good to see more and more people do stuff like this instead of following the crowd. If you want to express yourself more, you’ve now got some inspiration.
