Belfast is  a great city to visit for the day, a weekend or even for a longer holiday. It offers a variety of free attractions that showcase its rich history, culture, and natural beauty as well as additional attractions that you can pay for. Here are 21 free things to do in Belfast that the whole family can enjoy. 

Belfast City Hall

Right in the city centre you will find Belfast City Hall, a grand civic building that you can explore yourself or as part of a guided tour. It is full of fascinating exhibits covering the history of Belfast and its development. Alongside the indoor exhibits there is also an outside Titanic Memorial Garden which is dedicated to those who perished in the disaster. If you visit at Christmas this is also the area where you will find the Christmas Markets. The Belfast City Hall is a great place to visit if you want to learn more about this amazing city and its history. 

St. George’s Market

St. George’s Market is a must visit for anyone who visiting the city between Friday and Sunday. If you are looking for delicious, affordable, food on the go then you will definitely find some amazing food stalls here too. It is a vibrant market that has a whole host of stalls from crafts to clothing antiques to gifts, food to liquor. If you’re lucky you will also get the chance to hear some live music too. It’s free entry and worth a visit but obviously it could end up costing you money so maybe avoid if you really want a completely free day out in Belfast unless you have great will power and wont be tempted by the amazing smells and different products.

If you head to the Victoria shopping centre and take the lift to the top you will be able to take in the 360 panoramic views of Belfast City for free. Metropolitan arts centre 

The Metropolitan Arts Centre is located right in the heart of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and is open Tuesday’s to Sunday’s 9am-5pm. There are always a number of exhibits on display as well as regular events, classes and talks so do check the website in advance to make sure you don’t miss anything as some need to be booked in advance. This is the best place to go if you are a fan of the arts. 

Northern Ireland War Memorial

Situated within the Cathedral Quarter you can visit the Northern Ireland War Memorial for free. It is a small but poignant exhibit about Northern Ireland’s role during WWII. The displays include uniforms, ration books, and photos and they really give you an insights into the Belfast Blitz and local history.

Peace Walls

The Peace Walls are striking murals and graffiti that tell the story of Belfast’s divided past. They are a poignant reminder of the Troubles and are absolutely fascinating.  You will probably come across a few as you explore Belfast, especially if you are doing so in foot but if you want to know exactly where they are all and what they represent then book a free walking tour.

Another great idea for those that want to see the city by foot is to book yourself on to one of the free walking tours.  These are done by very well informed guides who not only show you the key landmarks like Peace Walls and City Hall but they also give you some fascinating facts and stories about Belfast’s history, including key events like the Troubles. It’s advised to book these in advance as they can get busy with them being free. 

Maritime Mile

The Maritime Mile is easily accessible from the city centre and is a lovely scenic walk along the River Lagan with. You can take in the sites, watch the boats and hunt for the The Big Fish sculpture. You will also be able to see views of the H&W Cranes and Titanic Quarter. If you are in Belfast in the evening then head here to watch the sunset as you will be gifted with a stunning sky.

 Linen hall Library 

Linen Hall Library is the oldest library in Belfast and is also the last subscribing library. It is located at in Donegall Square North and is open to the public. 

Queen’s University Belfast

The Queens University is within a stunning Gothic-style campus. Although open for students learning there are parts that are also open to the public including the Naughton Gallery, which hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. You can also explore the grounds of the Queen’s University and enjoy the lush green spaces perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. If you know the dates you will be in Belfast then it is recommended to check the website in advance as they often have free public lectures or free cultural events happening, however some need to be booked in advance. The Queens University is also right next to the Botanic Gardens so it’s worth combining the two. 

Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens are located next to Queen’s University Belfast so perfect if you viewing the uni and want to explore the area too.  The best time to visit is between April and August on a nice day as you will really be able to sit down, relax and take it all in as well as enjoy the open green spaces and maybe even have a picnic in the sun. That being said there is still plenty to see the whole year through, as there are inside areas too, you might just not stay as long if it’s cold and wet outside. The Botanic Gardens are a peaceful retreat with stunning horticulture and architecture around every corner, if you love flowers and plants you will love discovering what they have planted here.  There are also two inside areas, The Palm House, which is a Victorian glass house full of tropical plants and th Tropical Ravine where you will fine exotic flora like banana plants. 

Ulster Museum

The Ulster Museum is set within the Botanic Gardens and is a great addition to your trip. It is a  free museum that is a treasure trove of history, art, and science. Although the displays will change throughout the year you can almost always find

  • A vast dinosaur exhibit, including fossils and models.
  • A section on ancient Egypt, featuring a real mummy.
  • Irish history, from prehistoric times to modern-day conflicts.
  • Interactive exhibits for kids and families.

To fully appreciate the Ulster Museum you need between 1 and 2 hours but if you are in the area and don’t have this much time available it is still worth popping in and having a quick look round. I’d also recommend checking the website prior to your visit to see if they have any talks or activities on that you would like to see so you can time your visit accordingly. 

CS Lewis Square

If you are a C.S. Lewis fan then you have to visit CS Lewis square, Here you will be able to marvel at at incredible sculptures of beloved characters like Aslan, the White Witch, and Mr. Tumnus, all set out in a tranquil space where you can relax. 

Stormont Estate

If you have a car or are here for a few days and can travel to East Belfast then head to Stormont Estate  to enjoy the picturesque grounds with woodland trails and landscaped gardens. You will also be able to see the impressive Parliament Buildings. If you are looking for free things to do in Belfast with kids then this is one of the recommended ones, especially if the weather is nice as they can burn off some energy and enjoy the fresh air away from the city. 

Lagan Towpath

If you are looking for a leisurely walk or even a cycle then you can follow the route along the River Lagan and take in the sites of the scenic bridge and other historical markers. If you’re lucky you may also get to spot some incredible wildlife including herons and otters so don’t forget to bring your camera just in case.

Belfast Castle

You might be surprised to learn that Belfast Castle, it’s beautifully landscaped gardens and the visitor information centre, are all free to visit. However it is recommended that you ring ahead to check it is open to the public as it often closes when private events are taking place such as weddings and conferences. There is also free onsite parking here making it a truly free day out. That being said there is a coffee shop on site so the opportunity to spend money is there.

Cave Hill

Within the grounds of Belfast Castle you will find Cave Hill, named this due to the fact it has five caves located on the side of the cliffs. These all contain a wealth of natural, archaeological and historical features and are definitely worth a visit. The top of Cave Hill is a popular spot for getting photos of the landscape, so din’t forget your camera.

Cave Hill Country Park

As well as visiting Cave Hill you can also enjoy the surrounding Cave Hill country Park, full of breathtaking views. 

There are a number of trails you can take up to walk up Cave Hill, of varying lengths and difficulty, including;

  • Cavehill Trail is a 4.5 mile (7.2 kilometres) circular walking route. For this route, you need sturdy walking shoes and clothing for inclement weather. The trail takes in McArt’s Fort. The total ascent of the trail is 256 metres and needs a good level of fitness.
  • Estate Trail is a 2.4 mile (3.9 kilometres) circular walking route through the woodland. This follows paths on the lower slopes of the country park. The total ascent of the route is 134 metres.
  • Castle Trail is a short 0.8 mile (1.3 kilometres) circular trail taking in the gardens in Belfast Castle.

Cave Hill Adventurous Playground

Cave Hill Adventurous Playground is also free. It is suitable for children aged three to 14 years old and will give them hour of fun and the chance to burn of lots of energy and let their imaginations run wild. The playground has swings, slides, rockers, roundabouts, a climbing space net and even an aerial runway. Don’t forget to pack your picnic if you want to stay all day. 

Colin Glen forest Park

Colin Glen Forest Park is a beautiful wooded river glen on the edge of Belfast and Lisburn. It comprises 200 acres of scenic woodland, river, open grassland, waterfalls and wildflower areas. It is free to enter and has numerous walks and trails that you can take to explore the park. If you are visiting Belfast with your dog then this is a must see at it is dog friendly and one of the nicest dog walking areas in the City.
