The Liverpool Celebrates festival took place at the iconic Pier Head by Liverpool docks over bank holiday weekend, Friday 23rd -Monday 26th August 2024 and we were lucky enough to get invited down to check it out on Bank Holiday Monday for the family day. Here is everything you need to know about the Liverpool Celebrates festival along with our review so you can decide for yourself if you’d like to book tickets next summer.
What is Liverpool Celebrates?
Liverpool celebrates is a four-day music extravaganza that takes place over bank holiday weekend in Liverpool, there are dozens of acts every day from legendary artists to tribute acts as well as up and coming talent. It’s a day festival which means there are no opportunities to camp or stay on site, however if you aren’t local to Liverpool you could of course book into a hotel nearby if you wanted to do more than one day.
Liverpool Celebrates runs across four days and each day had a different theme helping to celebrate the musical heritage of the city.
- Friday was Liverpool Legends;
- Saturday was Party At The Pier;
- Sunday’s Mathew Street Legacy;
- then Bank Holiday Monday was the Cavern Takeover and family day.
There were some amazing acts playing over the weekend including The Jacksons and Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Boyzlife, The Lightning Seeds, Space, China Crisis, N-Trance, Tea Street Band plus a range of cover artists and local emerging stars.
Our Review of the Family Day at Liverpool Celebrates
We came for the Bank Holiday Monday which is advertised as being the Cavern Takeover and family day. We arrived just after 1pm when it first opened and although there was a queue to get in it wasn’t very busy and the staff were very quick and efficient at checking I.D’s. tickets and bags so kept the lines moving swiftly which was good. Our children were given yellow wristbands which meant they were identifiable as being under 18 and these also had space on them to write our contact details on should we get separated, a great idea for those with small children in a very busy public place, just remember to take a pen so you can fill this in.
The day kicked off with an Adel Tribute act. She was brilliant and really did sound like Adel, it was a great way to get everyone in the mood for dancing. After Adel there was a brief gap whilst they changed the stage for the next act but what I thought was very clever was that whilst this went on there was a local band playing down the other end of the arena to keep everyone distracted and entertained and this seemed to happen between every act, such a good idea.
Although we didn’t stay all day we did watch a few more acts including tributes for The Who (who’s Next), Elton John (Authentic Elton) and The Beatles, all of which were amazing. They really got the crowd going and every act did a great job of picking a mix of songs that included some massive hits but also some easier to dance to whether you knew them or not.
Overall we had a wonderful day and would go back again next year. The only feedback I would share is that although it is advertised as being a family day, there wasn’t much for younger children to do and even our older boys (11 and 14) struggled with the majority of the music as they were unfamiliar with the artists and the songs. I think that a family day should probably have a bigger focus on being family orientated with some extra activities or more relevant artists, where as this was more of a tribute day and if you looked at it like that then it was an incredible tribute day and one I would return to next year, just without the kids.
Overall it was a great way to spend August bank holiday, we had a great time dancing in the sunshine and belting out some old classics.
