3 Reasons why Bordeaux may be the Best City in France

There is no denying that France is a beautiful part of the worlds and a country that everyone should visit at least once in their life. It has so many different areas, each one offering something completely different, from the magic of Disney Land in Paris to the history of Carcassonne. But could it be that Bordeaux is actually the best city in France? Here are three reasons why we think that’s the case and why you should make it a top priority to visit when planning your next French adventure.

The architecture

Bordeaux is a port based city in the South West of France which is steeped in history and architectural brilliance. As you explore the city you will be able to stop and admire some of the most wonderful buildings in France. Our top three must see buildings are

Pont de Pierre – Built in 1822 the Pont de Pierre is a bridge that rises above the river Garonne connecting the two parts of Bordeaux, Victor Hugo Cours and Avenue Thiers.┬áNot only is the Pont de Pierre worth a visit for it’s architectural wonders but also for the views that it offers of the city.

Palais Gallien – The perfect place to explore French history and Roman architecture, these remains were once a grand amphitheatre but are now a tourist attraction for different reasons.

Bordeaux Cathedral – This Roman Catholic Church which was built in the 11th Century uses both Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles and is now considered to be a UNESCO world Heritage site and a national monument of France. You can admire the Cathedral from both the outside and the in.

Free Walking Tours Bordeaux

Unlike some areas of France, Bordeaux has a range of free activities for you to enjoy, including some fantastic tours by free walking tours Bordeaux. You can chose to tour the main area and discover the most popular attractions along with a few hidden gems, join a waking tour of both the modern and medieval Bordeaux or opt for a more peaceful walking tour where you can discover one of most beautiful villages within Bordeaux, Saint Emilion. All three of these fantastic options last two hours and are completely free for you to join and should be added to everyone’s Bordeaux itinerary.

The wine

If you are a wine lover, or even if you aren’t, you can’t deny the fact that Bordeaux produces some of the best wine in France, if not the world. So when in Bordeaux it is a must to immerse yourself in the history of the wine making by visiting not one but two wine museums. Of course, once you’ve visited the museums it makes perfect sense to book a vineyard tour and sample the goods for yourself too. And don’t forget to grab a couple of bottles to take back home with you too.
