Last night we were invited to the Bolesworth Christmas Light Trail in Cheshire. It will be running from 2nd December until 24th December 2022 between 4pm and 9pm and is the perfect festive activity for the whole family, including the dog!
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!For those of you not familiar with Bolesworth it is a country house set in beautiful grounds surrounded by the stunning Cheshire countryside. It hosts numerous events throughout the year including equestrian competitions, pumpkin picking and even a circus. And this year it has been transformed into a festive wonderland for their Christmas Light Trail.
What to expect from the Bolesworth Christmas Light Trail

When you arrive, you enter a Winter Wonderland with festive music playing, lots of Christmas market style huts selling food, drink, and gifts and a selection of rides suitable for the whole family. Off to the right is where you go for your Santa visit, unfortunately it was sold out so we were unable to do this so if you are thinking of adding it on make sure you do so in advance.
On the far side of the Winter Wonderland you will find the entrance to the Boleworth Christmas Light Trail, which is 1.2 miles of gorgeous festive lights that follow a loop around the woodland. The lights are rather magical with something new to see everywhere you look. There are even interactive areas for the children to get hands (or feet) on and they are all accompanied by the sounds of Christmas music playing in the background, it’s stunning.
At about the half way mark you will arrive at a hub of Christmas activity where you can see real reindeers grazing on hay, roast marshmallows and enjoy a drink and something to eat before heading off for the second half of the light trail.
The trail ends with a walk over a beautiful rainbow bridge bringing you back out where you started so you can carry on enjoying your evening with more food, drink and rides should you wish. Or, if you prefer, you could opt to go round the light trail again as there is no specific times and once you are in Bolesworth you can stay for as long as like.
We had a wonderful evening. All three children aged 3, 10 and 12 enjoyed it and it definitely felt festive and Christmassy. For us the length of the trail was perfect, long enough to feel like an activity in itself but not too long that the children complained about having to go for a walk. As Layla has a broken leg we took her in the push chair and can say that the whole route is push chair friendly, however, if the weather has been bad before your visit be mindful that it could be muddy which would make it tricker.
Top Tips
- If you’re taking toddlers or small children and intend on letting them walk dress them in bright coats or add a reflective piece of clothing to them as although there are lots of lights it is busy and there are some parts that are very dark. However, it is all perfectly safe to let them explore as long as you can see them.
- Take your bank card, lots of places were cashless.
- Don’t forget to buy your parking pass when you book your tickets and have this handy when you drive in to avoid holding up the traffic.

The entrance fee is

This gets you entry to the Winter wonderland and the light trail, everything else is extra and I strongly advise you book Santa in advance as some dates are already sold out.
The prices at most of the stalls are what you would expect at an event like this with food ranging from £4.50 for chips to £15 for more substantial meals. Below is the menu from the bar at the halfway point.
You can buy 3 large marshmallows on a stick ready to roast for £3 and the rides start at £2.50 for the children’s rides and £5 for the nig kid/adult ones.
