I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical | Review

The Liverpool Theatre Festival is running from 31st August until 11th September at St. Lukes Bombed out Church. Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening show, ‘I wish my life were like a musical’ and what a show they picked to kick off the festival. It was hilarious from start to finish. Not just smile and nod your head funny but proper laugh out loud funny, mainly because you knew what they were saying was so true.

I wish my life were like a musical was a sell-out show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and it is not hard to tell why. It is a 5 man show made up of 4 main performers and a very talented pianist, including West End regulars who really are the best people to perform this story as they have literally lived it.

The show is one hour long and takes you on a brutally honest journey of what life in theatre is like, from leaving drama school all the way through to making it big. Including lots of ropey auditions, excuses, and questionable jobs. There are so many relatable tales throughout and things that as a non performer you can imagine to be true but from the cackles from some of the audience members I got the distinct feeling that these tales were very true to form and probably not exaggerated in the least. There were definitely a few looks among the audience that screamed “that’s me, that’s me”.

If you ever get the chance to see I wish my life were like a musical, then I highly recommend that you do. It is a fantastic feel good show full of music, dance and comedy.

Unfortunately you have missed watching it at the stunning Bombed Out Church in Liverpool for now but fear not as there are still 10 days left of the Liverpool Theatre Festival with something for everyone from family friendly shows to cabaret and comedy to opera, you are bound to find something you like so grab yourself some tickets and enjoy a trip to the open air theatre this week.
