Today, 8th March 2019, is International Women’s Day. A day where we stop and take a moment to appreciate the fantastic achievements that have been made by women the world over. Some of the fantastic Women that I think need celebrating on a day like today include
Amelia Earhart the first female to fly solo
Vigdís Finnbogadóttir the worlds first female president
Emmeline Pankhurst the leader of the suffragette movement
and Margaret Thatcher first female prime minister
to name only a few.
However International Women’s Day isn’t just about focusing on the achievements of women but about looking at equality and this year the theme is focusing on promoting a gender-balanced world. One where men and women are treated equally, one where they are given the same opportunities and one where their achievements are celebrated equally. We want to see a world where there is a gender-balanced board room, a gender-balanced government and gender-balanced staff rooms in all walks of employment. A world I feel we are getting closer to as so many strong and empowered women continue to smash through those glass ceilings and prove they are just as hungry, just as talented and just as deserving as their male counter parts.
What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day then with a competition to win a copy of the amazing book Voices of powerful women by Zoe Sallis.
