Book Recommendations for National Read A Book Day

Today is National Read A Book Day, a day that was created to encourage people, young and old, to read books. Not something that I, a complete work worm, needs much encouragement for but a day that grabbed my attention all the same and as I’m passionate about reading I’d thought I’d share a few of my favourite books and also some new ones from a variety of genres because reading is reading whether it’s a novel or a cook book!

Three of my favourite books

Seven Lies by Elizabeth Kath – this is one of those books that you simply can’t put down. I felt like I always needed to know what was going to happen next and despite my love for guessing and usually being pretty good at my predictions Seven Lies surprised me on a number of occasions. It’s classed as a thriller and there is definitely a “who dunit” feel to it but it’s not scary

Flat Share by Beth O’Leary – This is one of those really easy reads that leaves you wanting more. I found myself really invested in the characters and willing them to make certain choices. It’s the perfect holiday book in my opinion.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes – Me before you is quite possibly my favourite ever book but be warned it’s an emotional roller coaster from start to finish and I definitely shed a lot of tears during this one. However, if you don’t mind a good cry then this is a must read.

New releases for the kids

Glitched by Emily Snape Glitched is great for children that love technology and gaming as it tells the story of two brothers who end up traveling through time. This book is perfect for those that are starting to take an interest in chapter books and independent reading as the text is large and clear, the chapters are short and it is broken up with some fab illustrations so it wont seem too daunting for them.

Try not to Die Ghostland by Duncan Ralston and Mark Tullius This is a most unusual book and one that will be different for each reader as you get to pick the destiny of the characters by making choices at various stages in the book, these choices then dictate which page you jump to next. It’s a little bit complicated for those just starting to read alone but would be a great book to read together or for those a little older.

New releases for adults

He is not Worthy by Lis McDermott – There is a new suspense romance on the shelves and if this is your style then you should go grab a copy today. This is Lis McDermott’s debut novel but I don’t think it will be her last

Rhi Dobbs is head of the art department in a secondary school in Whittingbury, a small town on the south west coast of England. She has her dream job and lives in her own idyllic cottage by the sea with her cat Tibbs. Her life is more than she could ever hope for.
Ben Brooks is a loner who cares for his mum, who always makes him feel worthless. He is obsessed with a red-headed girl who he met several years ago, just once, on what was the worse day of his life. He lives his life vicariously through hers, until she does the unspeakable…
Tragic events and an inappropriate love affair mean that both of their lives will be changed for
ever.”

From the self improvement category

Stepping into my shoes by Dr Catherine A Baudino – If you love a good self development book then this one is for you. Written by the amazing Dr Catherine A Baudino this book helps you explore ways in which you can over come the obstacles in your life and reach your full potential. There is lots of great advice based on the authors own experience as well as lots of case studies and tools that you can implement yourself.

New releases for those that love to cook

The Complete Air Fryer Cook Book by San & Dom Milner – Last year the air fryer definitely took the UK by storm with most families now owning one but not everyone is utilising theirs to the best of its abilities. If that’s you and you find your air fryer is mainly used for chicken nuggets and chips or toasties at a push then this book is for you. It is full of over 140 super easy recipes covering the sweet and the savory and even a full roast dinner!

The Thrift Baker by Hermine Dossou – Again a great book for those that love to try new things but don’t always know where to start and don’t want to spend a fortune on ingredients. Hermine has created a book with over 60 recipes in all based on her years as living on a budget as a single parent. There really are some fantastic and cheap ideas in here.
