Twelve Yuletide Yarns at Theatre Porto | Review

This Christmas there is a new show at Theatre Porto, in Ellesmere Port, Twelve Yuletide Yarns. It’s a celebration of courage, generosity and fairness told in 12 bitesize stories, with one cheeky carrot running a muck throughout! It’s a laugh out loud performance aimed at those aged 6 and over and what makes this even more beautiful is that Twelve Yuletide Yarns was inspired by the creative work of children in primary schools in Tendring and Ellesmere Port and has only been made possible thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England with funds from the National Lottery and the support of Tendring District Council and the Shared Prosperity Fund.

We went to watch Twelve Yuletide Yarns with our 6 year old daughter, who when asked, gave it a 5 carrot review! It’s a very relaxed performance with one main storyteller, a musician and a props manager, and of course the star of the show, the carrot!

It starts with an empty hanging rack but throughout the show 12 signs are slowly added, each one representing a different yarn, helping to make it a more visual performance.

The twelve yarns are all very different, some are poetic, some have a take home meaning and others are just quit simply bizarre but they are all engaging and link together nicely. My daughter’s favourite parts were every time the carrot got involved which happens a few times between the 6 yarns and then more frequently later on as the yarns start to tell carrots story, a fascinating tale of a carrot on the run! These parts are amusing, fast paced and dramatic and really caught the imagination of the audience, adults and children alike.

As a family we loved how relaxed it was and thought that 50 minutes was the perfect timing for little ones.

If you are looking for a fun activity to do this Christmas but don’t fancy a long panto or something overly festive then this is a lovely family friendly treat.
