Whether you are enjoying a British summer or travelling to a warmer climate to top up your tan there are some safety precautions that you should also follow in order to protect yourself from the sun. Regardless of your skin type, exposure to UV radiation from the sun can cause your skin to be permanently damaged and even lead to the development of skin cancer. Below Malibu Sun, the sun protection experts give you their 4 top tips for staying safe in the sun.
Here are their top tips for staying safe in the sun:
Sunscreen on a cloudy day
Don’t forget your sunscreen even on cloudy days! A cool or overcast day can have similar UV levels to a warm, sunny day. These levels can even be more intense due to the reflection off the clouds, so always make sure you are applying your sunscreen to both you and your children before you head out.
Take cover
Always seek shade between 11am and 3pm – these hours are when the sun’s UV rays shine the strongest and therefore can be the most dangerous. Try and stay indoors or in the shade when possible and if you do need to be out and about in the sun between these hours then remember to wear a hat that offers shade to your face and neck.
Use SPF 30 on children
We recommend SPF 30 lotion and above for children. Remember to protect children with hats and loose clothes, and keep babies in the shade as much as possible.
Reapply every two hours
Remember to reapply your sun cream throughout the day. No matter the SPF, sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before you head into the sun and reapplied every 2 hours after going in the water.
